JOZEF MICHALSKI

CATALOGUE

Atlas11-25_I(Cng), 2026, Fake Painting, 200.3cm × 127.1cm

A catalogue of active bodies of work within Jozef Michalski’s practice. This catalogue page gives the viewer a structured entry into Michalski’s active bodies of work, viewing the practice through a set of linked series, each opening onto a different way the image is formed and carried into material or digital surface.

NOTE

Jozef Michalski (b. 1999) is an Ana-Cartographer working within the postdigital condition. His practice operates through painting, image-field construction, scanning, databending, compression, sonification, and computational imaging processes that transform environmental scans, photographic capture, and indexed data into unstable image surfaces. He is presently undertaking an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art and working with Snap Inc. on an AR-based imaging project that extends Ana-Cartographic methods into spatial and augmented environments. His work has been exhibited internationally across the UK, Europe, and the United States, including at the Royal College of Art, Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, and Café Moskau, Berlin.
Michalski’s practice enacts a re-materialisation of the image through recursive decomposition, material translation, and signal disturbance. Landscapes, archives, surfaces, and found visual systems are treated as unstable reservoirs of information, then pushed through processes of scanning, corruption, layering, compression, and drift. Glitch operates as a structural force within the work: a rupture that unsettles recognition, erodes stable form, and registers the pressure of ecological, political, and technological systems on contemporary image culture.
The process of creating these works moves between fieldwork, digital capture and material testing, allowing a base in which image degradation can take physical form. These works develop through directly encounter sites of high turmoil, allowing the carrying of gathered visual material through successive translations until field evidence, digital signal, painted matter, and degraded image structure operate as one continuous visual ecosystem. The image becomes a site of pressure, in which terrain becomes  surface, allowing a material record of distortion.

ABOUT

Ojczyzna02-21_V, 2021-2025, Sonified Film (cira 1997), 2480px × 3508px

An About page giving the viewer a direct entry into the conditions that shape Michalski’s practice, framing the work as an ongoing movement from lived research into constructed image-fields.
